About:

Hey it's your boy, Emo Boy from 2009Scape :-)

First off, sorry that I am a terrible web developer... Hope this site is at least readable. I assure you the game is a lot prettier than the site.

This is fork of 2009Scape. I played RS2 back in actual 2006-2010, and it made for some of the best memories of my life. So I was delighted when I found 2009Scape last year. I played quite a lot (you may see me from time to time as Emo Boy on 2009Scape). Recognizing that, as an adult, I actually have responsibilities and I can't spend my life grinding away at a point-and-click game that is old enough to drive, I played at the 5x experience rate. And, having seen various content and challenges coming out of OSRS, I thought I would play Ironman. And I had a wonderful time (you can see this on the hiscores over at 2009Scape.org, again, IGN Emo Boy). It was actually quite easy to adapt to Ironman mode, since you may recall Jagex had removed free trade in the era of the game I played.

I love 2009Scape and will still login from time to time to play a bit and enjoy the wonderful community.

However, I learned 2 things from my time spent in 2009Scape:

  1. While 5x Exp is great for those of us who are at least half functioning adults, you blow through the early game (which is a very nostalgic part), and end game grinds are still end game grinds.
  2. A project focused on recreating a perfectly authentic emulation of RuneScape as it was in 2009 is wonderful if you want to play exactly like you did in 2009. While I know a lot of us wandered away from the game, the game has progressed. While I am not fond of OSRS, it has brought us interesting new playstyles like Ironman mode and chunk/area locked accounts instead of just the pures and skillers we had back in 2009.

As someone with a bit of programming knowledge (and a fair bit of DevOps knowledge), and in the spirit of open source projects/free as in freedom software, I have decided to create my own fork, program my own modifications, and run my own server, where I can indulge in my own adventure. And you are invited to join!

What's different from 2009Scape:

Everything listed here (I will update this as these projects diverge)

The most obvious change is the Scaled XP multiplier... Instead of a flat 5X or 2.5X XP multiplier, I have created an option that will let you savor the nostalgic journey while still allowing for adult responsibilities. These modes, Scale to 10x and Scale to 5x start with the normal XP rate and linearly increase the XP rate by a multiplier as you gain XP, until reaching 10x or 5x at level 99, where they are capped. This will also give you an interesting decision of when to turn in big lump-sum XP drops like quests, since you will get more if you wait until a higher level, but you may reach that higher level faster if you turn them in sooner to increase your XP multiplier :-)

I have also brought back Hardcore (Permadeath) Ironman Mode (Recently removed on 2009Scape)

Basically, while 2009Scape strives and very much succeeds in recreating the exact experience of the 2009 game, EmoScape is basically my pet project with my own tweaks to capture what I believe to be the spirit of the game. When I was a middle school kid playing RS back in 2009, my friends and I had so much fun discussing possible updates or new content we would love to see in the game we loved. Now as an adult, I can bring some of it to life...

You can expect generally the game as it was in 2009, with the occasional, tasteful tweak or very carefully planned, lore-driven custom content. There won't be any silly huge bosses that drop godswords and party hats right under lumby like you might see on some custom servers. There won't be custom gear with insane stats (like we see in OSRS). Just a fun game for us to enjoy.
